EASTERN LIGHT is a classic Japanese Sankyoku ensemble featuring koto, shamisen, shakuhachi and voice performing traditional and contemporary solos, duos and trios ranging from Japan’s Edo period to recent commissions. The artists are the principal performers of Japanese instruments with the music organization Kyo-Shin-An Arts, and as such have worked together for over a decade. Their concerts and workshops are brought to life with stories and histories about the music told from the stage and in pre- or post-concert discussions. They also perform in ensembles with Western instruments as well as repertoire solely for Japanese instruments. Most recently, Eastern Light appeared in a five-concert tour that featured appearances at Haverford College in Ardmore, PA; Music in the Nave in Kent, CT; a performance for the Cheswatyr Foundation in Tyringham, MA; Bargemusic in Brooklyn, NY; and for Kyo-Shin-An Arts in NY, NY. Upcoming performances include October 2023 (NYC) and with the Arianna String Quartet in April 2024 at the Touhill Center in St. Louis, MO and East Central College in Union, MO.
